DECEMBER 24 – 30, 2017
“You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14 ERV)
Have you ever wondered about the Christmas lights? Why do we spend so much to decorate our Christmas trees and houses with so much light? I did a bit of research, because as I was meditating on this Christmas Special Inspirational Truth, my heart wouldn’t walk away from the thought of the Christmas lights. I knew there was something deeper than what I already knew about it, and I knew that deeper thing had to do with Jesus Christ and us.
The tradition of lighting trees and houses during Christmas time dates back to the 17th century. It originated from Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe. The lighting of the Christmas tree symbolized Christ being the light of the world. Some would light up candles by their window to indicate to other Christians that they were welcome to worship with them. Before the electrical Christmas lights were created by Thomas Edison, candles were used to light up the Christmas tree.
In my research I found very interesting, another reason for lighting up the Christmas tree. The Winter season in which Christmas is celebrated, has some of the darkest days of the year. The sun goes down quite early, and adding candles to the Christmas Tree was a way to brighten a room. I found it very interesting because for me it represents John 1:5; light shining in the darkness. Hallelujah!
Let us for a moment ignore the lighting up of houses during Christmas and focus on the lighting up of the Christmas Tree, which was where this tradition began. The kingdom of God is the kingdom of Light. Obviously the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ has to be full of lights representing Jesus the light of the world and the Kingdom of God in the earth. So, when you see those lights on a Christmas tree or anywhere else during Christmas time, think about the kingdom of God in the earth and rejoice. Then, think about your role in ensuring the kingdom of God is established and takes over the part of the earth you find yourself.
Much more than the lights representing the kingdom of God or Christ, I believe the lights represent you and I. The kingdom of God is inside us, it is our duty to deliver the kingdom of God to the earth, whichever part of the earth we are in. It is our duty to eliminate the darkness in the earth, whichever part of the earth we find ourselves. It is our duty to let our lights shine because we are the light of the world. So, when you see the Christmas lights, think about you and how effective you are in lighting up your world.
Dear Reader, Christmas is about you! Jesus came so that you may have life and enjoy life abundantly (John 10:10). Jesus came so that you can fulfill your purpose as a light to your world, and that is you having life and enjoying life abundantly. Without Jesus your light can never shine (John 15:5). No matter how greatly you think your light is shining without Jesus, you haven’t seen anything yet until you hook up with Jesus. With Jesus your light will shine unhindered, uninterrupted… without any frustrations, hurts, pain, depression, unhappiness, failures…
Jesus is the true vine (John 15). He is the true Christmas Tree, and we are the lights on the Christmas Tree. Read DON’T JUST HANG THERE, PLUG IN. As long as we are hooked up to the Christmas Tree and plugged in, our lights will shine for the world to see their way through life and become lights as well. As we celebrate Christmas, know that it’s about you! Celebrate you! Make it a day and a season of thanksgiving because Jesus was born so that you can be who God created you to be. Make it a time to reflect on your relationship with the Tree and how well you are fulfilling your purpose as the light of the world.
I pray that your light will shine very brightly for all to see and glory your father which is in heaven. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Amen! Merry Christmas!
