“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3 KJV)
This verse of scripture is so powerful! It’s meaning to me, goes beyond being in agreement concerning certain things, to harmony in life, or life’s rhythms. I will explain.
Harmony is combining two or more to become one. With harmony, the oneness is so ‘one’ that you can hardly tell the individual ‘ones’ apart. Take harmony in music for instance, different sounds are combined to produce one music. All you hear is one music. However, if any of the instruments or vocals were to stray away from the rhythm, you will struggle to enjoy the music because rather than one music, you are actually hearing two different music. You will struggle to continue listening because it could give you a headache, for it has become noise.
If the instrument or vocals that went wild (out of harmony) gets back into the rhythm of the whole, you will once again begin to enjoy the music. This means that in harmony there is rhythm. It is when all the individuals involved understand and progress in the rhythm that harmony is produced.
What is a rhythm? A rhythm is a pattern! Rhythm is a repeated pattern or order. Everything has a rhythm. Grace has a rhythm. Our thoughts have rhythm. People have rhythms. As in the text, can two walk together, except they be agreed? Let me rephrase that: “Can two walk in harmony except they have the same rhythm?
You cannot force yourself or someone else to have the same rhythm as you. It is something that is predetermined by God. Your rhythm depends on the purpose God brought you to this earth for. You came to this earth complete with everything you need to fulfill your purpose; everything including people, places, money, material things… Everything! As you walk in your purpose, these resources will begin to locate you, and you them.
Have you met someone and it seemed like you had known them for a long time? You just keyed in with them. Well, it’s because they have your rhythm. You were supposed to meet them. They were in you before you met them physically.
No matter how hard you try, there are some people you just cannot walk with. There is nothing wrong with you or them, you just don’t have the same rhythm so you cannot walk in harmony. “But from Psalm 133:3, we are supposed to all walk together in harmony.” You may be saying. And you will be right! However, what does “all” mean? Do you know you are not meant to meet everybody in the world, or in your community or on your street, or that you’re with? Your life is pre-arranged!
“All” is specific to you and your purpose. It is just like when the bible says in Philippians 4:13, that we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us. Can we really do all things? No we can’t! We can only do “all” things that God has called us to do; all the things we were created with the specifications to do. Why do we have different churches? It is because, try as you may, you will never get blessed in some certain churches. Not because there is something wrong. No! Others are getting really blessed there. It is because your rhythm is different. It is where you find your rhythm harmonising with the rhythm in a certain church that you experience your blessing.
The same goes for other things in life including marriage. “What God has joined together…” (Mark 10:9). Remember that God is the one who determines the rhythms, that is why we must ensure it is Him joining together. One important thing to note though is that, not everyone we harmonise with will always be a match. This means that some people, places and things were only meant to be in your life for a season.
Dear Reader, how do you know who, where and what to harmonise with? “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you will learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30 MSG). Let Jesus teach you the unforced rhythms of grace so that you can enjoy your life fully!
By keeping company with Jesus, your mind begins to be renewed to the rhythm of His mind. As this happens, transformation begins to take place in your life. You will begin to effortlessly walk in the will of God for your life, connecting with the people, places, things, resources… that have your rhythm. The result? Blessings! An outpouring of blessings!
The power of God to help you walk in His will for your life is incredibly great. I pray that He will lead you to harmonise with all the resources (people, places, things, etc) that have your rhythm for an outpouring of blessings to you. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth! Amen! God bless you amazingly this week!
